How Designers Choose a Rug Size

Three rules govern nearly every rug decision in professional interiors:

1. Anchor the furniture. In seating areas, at least the front legs of every major piece should rest on the rug. A rug nobody touches reads as an island and shrinks the room.

2. Leave a border of floor. Keep 12–18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls (8–12 inches in smaller rooms). The reveal frames the rug like a mat frames a print.

3. When torn, size up. The most common mistake in self-decorated rooms is a rug one size too small. Going from a 5x8 to an 8x10 changes a room more than almost any other same-budget swap.

Frequently Asked Questions

‍What size rug do I need for my living room?
Most living rooms take an 8x10 or 9x12. The rule: the rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of every seating piece rest on it, with 12–18 inches of bare floor at the walls. A typical 12x15 room takes a 9x12; a 10x12 room takes an 8x10.

‍What size rug goes under a queen bed?
An 8x10, placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends about 24 inches beyond each side and the foot. Choose a 9x12 if you want the nightstands on the rug too.

‍What size rug goes under a king bed?
A 9x12 is the standard under a king or California king, leaving 22–28 inches of rug showing per side. In a large room, a 10x14 lets the whole bed wall sit on the rug.

‍What size rug do I need under a dining table?
Add at least 24 inches — ideally 30 — to every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. A 6-seat 36x72 table needs an 8x10 minimum; an 8-seat table usually needs a 9x12; a 48-inch round table pairs with an 8-foot round rug.

‍What is the most common rug size mistake?
Buying too small. A rug floating in front of the sofa with nothing touching it makes the room feel smaller and unfinished. When in doubt, size up.
