Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

Followers are vanity; engagement is the number that tells you whether your content actually lands. Enter your followers and average interactions to get your engagement rate — measured the way agencies measure it, benchmarked against interior-design account tiers, with saves and shares counted separately because for design accounts they matter most.

Instagram Engagement Rate Benchmarks by Follower Tier

Engagement rate falls as accounts grow — more passive followers dilute the same core of active fans — so a good rate is always relative to size. These ranges are for the standard public metric (likes + comments ÷ followers). The calculator highlights the row that matches your account.

FollowersLowAverageStrong
Under 1,000 (nano)<3%4–6%7%+
1,000 – 10,000 (micro)<2.5%3–5%6%+
10,000 – 50,000<1.8%2–3.5%4%+
50,000 – 100,000<1.5%1.7–3%3.5%+
100,000+ (macro)<1.2%1.3–2.5%3%+

Interior design sits among the more visual, save-heavy niches, so a healthy design account often reads a little above the general average once saves and shares are counted.
‍

How to Calculate Engagement Rate

Standard (by followers). (Average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. This is what social tools report and what you compare against competitors, because reach and saves are private on other accounts.

True engagement (with saves & shares). Add average saves and shares to the numerator. For interior designers this is often the more honest figure — design content is saved and shared far more than it is commented on, and Instagram rewards both with wider reach.

By reach. Total interactions ÷ average reach × 100. This strips out the followers who never saw the post and tells you how compelling the content itself was. It runs several times higher than the by-followers rate; use it to judge content, not to compare accounts.

What a Marketing Agency Actually Looks For

A strong engagement rate is a good sign, but on its own it does not pay for a project. What matters for a design studio is whether that engaged audience is the right audience — affluent homeowners and trade contacts in your market — and whether attention converts to booked consultations. A 6% rate from a giveaway audience is worth less than a 2% rate from local homeowners who can hire you.

Nakada Design reads engagement as one input among many, then builds the system that turns it into revenue: the searchable website, the content that ranks, and the AI-assisted follow-up that catches a lead before it cools. Frequently Asked Questions

‍What is a good Instagram engagement rate?
It depends on size: under 1k often 4–8%, 1k–10k around 3–5%, 10k–50k roughly 2–3.5%, 100k+ frequently 1.5% or lower. At or above your tier's range is strong — and saves lift the true figure higher.

‍How do you calculate it?
(Likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100. Add saves and shares for a truer rate; use likes and comments only when comparing to public benchmarks.

‍Followers or reach?
By-followers for benchmarking against others; by-reach to judge how compelling the content was. Reach-based rates run several times higher.

‍Do saves and shares count?
Yes — and for design accounts they may be the most valuable actions, because Instagram rewards them with wider distribution and design is saved and shared heavily.

‍Why does my rate drop as I grow?
Larger accounts pick up more passive followers, so the percentage falls even as raw engagement rises. That is why benchmarks are set by tier.
