Most living rooms take an 8x10 or 9x12. The rule: the rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of every seating piece rest on it, with 12-18 inches of bare floor at the walls. A typical 12x15 room takes a 9x12; a 10x12 room takes an 8x10.
An 8x10 rug is the standard choice under a queen bed, placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends roughly 24 inches beyond each side and the foot. A 9x12 works if you want the rug to reach under the nightstands as well.
A 9x12 is the standard under a king or California king, leaving 22-28 inches of rug showing per side. In a large room, a 10x14 lets the whole bed wall sit on the rug Read the result against your drawings, product sheets, or listing rules before you rely on it in a client meeting.
Add at least 24 inches (ideally 30) to every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. A 6-seat 36x72 table needs an 8x10 minimum; an 8-seat table usually needs a 9x12; a 48-inch round table pairs with an 8-foot round rug.
Buying too small. A rug that floats in front of the sofa with no furniture touching it makes the room feel smaller and unfinished. When in doubt, designers size up: front legs of all seating on the rug, and 12 to 18 inches of floor showing at the walls.
