Most board and batten walls look best with battens 16 to 24 inches apart; 18 inches is the classic starting point. Wider spacing reads more modern and calm, tighter spacing more cottage. Qué hacemosever the target, the gaps must be exactly equal. Start a batten at each end of the wall and let the calculator solve the in-between spacing.
Classic wainscot height is one-third of the wall, 32 to 38 inches under an 8 or 9-foot ceiling, aligning with chair-rail height. For drama, designers run it to two-thirds of the wall, around 60 inches, or take it full height. Avoid stopping exactly at half the wall, which visually cuts the room in two.
Battens are usually 1x2 (1.5 inches wide), 1x3 (2.5 inches) or 1x4 (3.5 inches) primed MDF or pine. 1x3 suits most rooms; 1x2 reads delicate, 1x4 bold and farmhouse. Top and bottom rails are commonly 1x4, with an optional 1x2 ledge on top.
With a batten at each end of the wall: gap = (wall width − number of battens × batten width) ÷ (number of battens − 1). Choose the batten count that brings the gap closest to your target spacing. The calculator does this and returns the exact gap to the sixteenth of an inch.
For painted interior walls, primed MDF is the default: flat, knot-free and affordable. Choose pine or poplar where corners take abuse, and PVC or moisture-resistant MDF in bathrooms. On textured walls, install a smooth plywood or hardboard field first (or skim-coat) so the panels read crisp.
