Keep a numbered copy for your own records and, ideally, attach a small reference photograph of the work. This produces a professional certificate; it is not legal or valuation advice.

Por qué a Certificate of Authenticity Matters

A certificate of authenticity is the paper that tells a collector, an appraiser and a future buyer that a work is genuinely what it claims to be. It is a cornerstone of provenance (the documented chain that follows a work through every owner), and provenance is a large part of what a serious artwork is worth. A painting with a clean COA and a clear history sells more easily, and for more, than the same painting without one.

For a living artist, the strongest certificate is one you sign yourself. Number your certificates, keep a matching copy, and issue one with every sale from the very first. Building that habit early is one of the quiet marks of a professional practice.
‍

Qué hacemos Belongs on the Certificate

The artist's name; the title, year, medium and dimensions; the edition, or a clear statement that the work is unique; where and how the work is signed; a unique certificate number; the date of issue; and the signature of whoever is authenticating it. A provenance line and a reference image make it stronger still. This generator arranges every one of those fields on a clean, framed certificate you can print on good stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Qué hacemos is a certificate of authenticity?

A certificate of authenticity (COA) is a signed document that verifies an artwork is a genuine, original work by the named artist. It records the work's title, year, medium, dimensions and edition, and is signed by the artist, their studio, gallery or estate. It travels with the work as part of its provenance and supports its value on resale.

Qué hacemos should it include?

At minimum: the artist's name; the title, year, medium and dimensions of the work; the edition or a statement that it is unique; where and how the work is signed; a unique certificate number; the date of issue; and the signature of the issuer (the artist, gallery or authorized representative). A small reference image and a provenance note are useful additions.

Quiénes somos can issue one?

The artist is the strongest issuer for living-artist work, followed by the representing gallery, publisher of an edition, or the artist's estate or foundation for deceased artists. A COA is only as credible as the party signing it, so it should be issued by someone with genuine authority to authenticate the work.

Does it need to be notarized?

No. A COA does not need to be notarized to be valid; its authority comes from the credibility of the artist, gallery or estate that signs it. Keep a matching copy for your records, number your certificates, and consider adding a reference photograph. Those steps do far more for credibility than notarization.

Is it free?

Yes. The tool is free to use in your browser with no signup required. Nothing is installed, and you can run as many calculations as you need for planning. Confirm critical figures with product data or a licensed professional before construction.
